UCA of SME forms Education and Training Committee

At the Aug. 5, 2008 meeting, the UCA executive committee approved the establishment of a permanent Education and Training Committee.  Its mission is to increase the quality of education and training available to engineers and construction supervisors.  By doing so, the training of tunnel engineers and constructors could be enhanced, which would contribute to the improvement of efficiency and effectiveness of the industry as a whole.

A number of possibilities for training initiatives were discussed.  Some included the creation of an institute or academy operated by SME volunteers, and/or a “certificate” program where the goal would be to recognize a basic level of competence and understanding in tunnel engineering and construction.  Another goal would be to encourage continuing education so that practitioners can stay current with the changes in the underground industry.   However, no such initiatives were approved at the Aug. 5 meeting.
 
The Education and Training Committee is seeking industry volunteers to participate in committee functions and be a part of the development of all such initiatives.  Participation on this committee does not require a permanent commitment of your time, but does require creativity and an interest in advancing the professionalism of our industry.  If you are interested in serving on this Education and Training Committee, please advise any of the following people.
