The American Underground Construction Association (AUA) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) have signed an agreement where by the SME will support the 2006 George Fox Conference to be held at the CUNY Graduate Center, 345 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY on January 24, 2006.
The late George Fox was a longtime tunneling contractor in the New York region and this conference was established to honor his many contributions to the under ground industry. This year’s conference will present an East Coast Perspective on projects in the planning or bidding stages and also feature current work throughout the East Coast.
SME will provide administrative, logistical and registration support for the conference. Realizing the synergy of the two organizations, discussions are continuing to broaden cooperation between AUA and SME.

More than 100 registrants attended the “Tunneling in Washington, D.C.” conference held on September 15, 2005. The event was co-sponsored by AUA and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Science at Howard University and was held at the Armour J. Blackburn Center at the University. Robert J.F. Goodfellow, Vice President, URS Corp., was conference chair.
Welcoming remarks were made by Dr. Lorraine Fleming, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Howard University; AUA President Thomas F. Peyton; and Bob Goodfellow.
The first presentation was a description of the CSO Program planned for Washington, D.C. by Mohsin Siddique, Manager of the DC WASA Long Term Control Plan. |
The second presentation was on “Planning for a Tunnel Project” by James McKelvey, Black and Veatch. Robert McDowell of HNTB spoke about “Putting the Program Together – Dulles Airport Automatic People Mover.”
In a section on Advances in Technology, Bill Hansmire, Parsons Brinckerhoff, spoke about Soft Ground Tunneling; Steve Kramer, Jacobs Civil, spoke about Microtunneling and Trenchless Technology; Bill Maloney, President, Shaft Drillers International, spoke about Shaft Sinking.
After Lunch, Mohammad Irshad, DIG Tunnel Consultants, described WMATA’s successful subway and station design and construction program. Wearing another hat, Bill Hansmire described the Planning for the Upper Rouge CSO Tunnel in Detroit, MI.
Bill Edgerton, President, Jacobs Associates, gave a presentation on AUA’s revision of the 1974 Better Contracting Practices document. The project is currently scheduled for completion in the summer of 2006, with a document being available in Fall 2006.
John Reilly spoke about “The Cost Estimation Validation Process – How to Develop and Defend a Reasonable Cost Estimate.” The CEVP process has been developed under the auspices of the Washington State Department of Transportation and shows great promise for reducing the occurrence of cost-overruns on a variety of projects.
The final event of the day was a panel discussion chaired by Bob Goodfellow, with participation by Joe Bradshaw, Bradshaw Construction; Bob Fitzgerald, Watt, Tieder, Hoffer and Fitzgerald; Dru Desai, DMJM+HARRIS, and Tom Clemens, American Commercial. They were asked by the moderator to address the actual and perceived role of the owner, designer, contractor and supplier in the execution of a successful project under the title “How does it all work?” A spirited discussion took place on how to better address some of the difficult aspects of underground project execution and several action items will be pursued by the moderator and others as a result.
